Robert Venturi , born the June 25th 1925 with Philadelphia (the United States) is a American Architecte post-modern.
After being graduate with the University of Princeton in 1947, it obtains a MFA in 1950 there. It continues its studies of 1954 to 1956 with the American Académie of Rome where it obtained a purse and where it falls under the influence from the Maniérisme and of the Baroque. He collaborates with Eero Saarinen and Louis Kahn before opening his own agency in 1958. In 1964 it joins John Rauch and a few years later his wife Denise Scott Brown, itself architect, joined the agency. After the departure of John Rauch in 1989, the agency took the name of Venturi, Scott Brown and Associates .
It obtained the prestigious Prix Pritzker in 1991. He taught in many universities (Yale, Princeton, Harvard, UCLA).
He built many buildings but it is especially its theoretical work which had a strong influence.
The study Complexity and Contradiction in Architecture published by the Museum off Modern art of New York in 1966, mark indeed the one time end, and no one another treaty will not have similar influence on the course of architecture during the three last decades of the 20th century. Without having its repercussion of it, its work has a range similar to that which had had in its time Towards an architecture of Le Corbusier.
The work of Venturi is heterogeneous in the sense that it as well includes/understands projects of urban development as of the villas, museums that supermarkets, houses of beach that research institutes. One of its principal achievements is an old people's home, Guid house in Philadelphia (1960-1963) from which Venturi is used for still readily to support its theses on the ugly one, the ordinary one and symbolic system in architecture. At the same period, it builds for his mother a petitre house in Chestnut Hill, close to Philadelphia; true report of its ideas and diversity and antagonism, it breaks with all functionalist conventions and does not move back in front of any perturbing visual effect, such its staircase placed against a wall.
