Robert Sammut

Robert Sammut (born the October 17th 1869 with Floriana, Malta, dead the May 26th 1934 with Sliema, Malta), type-setter of the national anthem Maltese L-Innu Malti, was doctor of profession. He studied at the University of Malta where he accepted his doctorate in medicine. He followed several other studies to Edinburgh and he becomes, later, professor of Pathologie.

Sammut played in an orchestra and it wrote the melodies of the songs there. A group of musicians close to the king took this music and Dun Karm Psaila, the national poet, inserted the words there. This was the genesis of the national anthem Maltese, which was played for the first time in public with the Théâtre Manoel in 1919.
