Robert Redeker

Robert Redeker is an aggregate professor of philosophy born in 1954. He taught with the Pierre-Paul-Riquet college of Saint-Orens-with-Gameville (suburbs of Toulouse) and with the National school of the civil aviation (ENAC). He is writer and member of the editorial board of the review Modern times , of the scientific committee of the CAL (Université Toulouse it Mirail), of the editorial board of the review Of the Laws and the Men and the commission “philosophy - religious sciences - psychoanalysis” of the National center of the Book.

Consecutive death threats with a platform published in Le Figaro

Context

The September 19th 2006, Robert Redeker published a text entitled “Vis-a-vis the islamist intimidations, which the free world must make? ” in Le Figaro . Robert Redeker written there:

Reactions

The Tunisia and the Egypt protested by prohibiting the diffusion of the Figaro comprising the platform. However, Jean Baubérot, if it takes party for freedom of expression and is indignant in its turn at what one can threaten the life of a man for his remarks, underlines nevertheless the caricature, the ignorance and the vindicativity which characterize according to him the text of Robert Redeker. Baubérot -- contrary to the precedents which intend to support Redeker " whatever the contents of the article" -- refuse to engage behind a man, insofar as he precisely sees in this type of engagement another danger planing on freedom of expression. Baubérot thus invites to defy " matter stéréotypés" who have as a target of the minorities, whose history showed at which ends they could bring. Defender of freedom of expression, Baubérot insists however on the fact that " the fight against intolerance does not exempt a fight against the silly thing haineuse."

In the same way, Internet site Oumma.com, site of information and debates on the history, the philosophy and the liturgy of Islam, opens a wire of discussion in which some academics specialists in Islam (among whom Jean-Michel Cros), on the one hand show the substantial inconsistency of the accused remarks of Robert Redeker by confronting them with the text, interpretation and the practice Koranic, on the other hand update the presupposed ideological ones of their author by registering them in the implicit Islamophobie of a thought reactionary fed, inter alia, by the lampoons of Oriana Fallaci, Michel Houellebecq or speeches of Josef Ratzinger.
