Robert Pinget

Robert Pinget is a Romancier and Dramatic author of origin Suisse, born in 1919 with Geneva and deceased in 1997 with Tours.

Biography

“It seems to me that when one is attracted by a writer, it is not its biography which interests. I am always astonished that one approaches a writer with questions which do not have anything to see, or to see little, with his work. I do not have life other than that to write. My existence is in my books…”

Born the July 19th 1919 in Geneva, Robert Pinget, after having finished studies of right, exerts the lawyer trade in Geneva during one year. It leaves Switzerland in 1946 for Paris, where it enters to the Art schools.

It publishes its first work, Between Fantoine and Agapa in 1951. In 1952, Robert Laffont publishes its first novel, Mahu or the Material , under the impulse of Georges Belmont. Then it is the Fox and the Compass at Gallimard, in 1953, thanks to the support of Albert Camus, Alain Robbe-Grillet and especially Samuel Beckett, which will remain a large friend of Pinget, advise it with Jerome Lindon, owner of the Éditions of Midnight. Graal Flibuste thus appears at Minuit in 1956, after being refused by Raymond Queneau at Gallimard. From now on, Minuit will be the editor of Pinget.

In 1960, it acquires French nationality and settles, in 1964, in Touraine, in what it calls its “thatched cottage”, where it will write the majority of its books. It built a tower there, and invents what is regarded as its “last vein”, namely the series of the “notebooks”, whose publication starts in 1982, with the publication of Mr Songe , of the name of this growing old character of which Robert Pinget forever denied that it was a form of Alter ego.

Shortly after the conference which is devoted to him to Tours, in 1997, it succumbs to a Brain attack in this same city, the August 25th 1997.
