Robert Mondavi

Robert Gerald Mondavi , born the June 18th 1913 with Virginia (Minnesota) with the the United States, is an important American wine producer whose innovations and strategies marketing brought an international recognition to the wines of the Napa Valley in California. Very early, Mondavi encourages the certification of the wines rather than a more general name. This way of doing became now a standard for the wines of the New World and received the favors of the majority of the consumers.

Family history

The parents of Robert Mondavi emigrated since the area of the Marches in Italy and were established with Virginia (Minnesota), where he studied with the Hibbing college. The family then settled with Lodi (California), where Cesare (his/her father) launched a company of fruit conditioning the C. Mondavi and Sons , conditioning and sending the bunches of grapes on the east coast, for the domestic manufacture of wine. Mondavi obtained a license in economy and direction of company to the Stanford University in 1937. It joined then his Cesare father and his Peter brother when the family repurchases the Charles Krug Winery of James Moffitt, founded in 1861 with Napa Valley.

After a quarrel with his/her young Peter brother, Mondavi leaves Krug in 1965 to open its clean hollow. It buys the vineyard of To Kalon with Oakville (California). The cellar which bears its name puts to produce a wine of very beautiful quality in the style of the missions of California.

In 1966, with his/her oldest son, R. Michael Mondavi, it founds the Robert Mondavi Winery in Napa Valley with an aim of producing a wine which can there compete with best the believed European ones.

Wines

In 1968 it produces a white Sauvignon dry was of oak, variety rather rare in California and names it " Smoked Blanc". This wine gained one big hit at this time and the Smoked White one became a synonym of white Sauvignon.

Mondavi then develops many wines which make to the unanimity as well experts as wine merchants. In 1979, it builds the Mondavi Woodbridge Winery in Lodi which becomes a leader as regards great wines. It also joins the Baron Philippe de Rothschild of the Château Sheep Rothschild to found the Opus One Winery and since the Années 1990 it joins partners in Europe, South America and Australia.

At the time of the tasting of the Large European Jury of 1997, the Chardonnay Reserve Robert Mondavi obtains the first place.

Autobiography and patronage

In 1998, Robert Mondavi publishes off his autobiography Harvests Joy: How the Good Life Became Great Business ISBN 0156010569. The film Mondovino is documentary devoted partly to the Mondavi family and her wines.

The December 22nd 2004, Constellation Brands buys the Mondavi cellar for some 1,36 billion $.

Thanks to the contributions of the husbands Robert and Margrit Mondavi, the theater of Davis (California) is born and is naturally baptized the Mondavi Center. Both are also the founders and principal contributors of the COPIED (American Center of the wine, the table and arts), which opened its doors in 2001 in the town of Napa (California).

They also finance the restoration of the Napa Valley Opera House and of the Oxbow School, as well as school of art of Napa. They also contribute to the restoration of the Lincoln Theater of Yountville (California) and support the Cantor Arts Center of the Stanford University of Palo Alto.
