Robert Mond

Sir Robert Ludwig Mond , born the September 9th 1867 with Farnworth (Lancashire) and deceased the October 22nd 1938 with Beautiful-Isle-in-Ground (Coast-with Armor - Brittany), was a British chemist , wire of Ludwig Mond, itself chemist and cofounder of Brunner-Mond Company and collector of works of Article.

It follows secondary studies to the college of Cheltenham, then university with St Peter' S Collège, with Cambridge, the polytechnic school of Zurich, and the universities of Edinburgh and Glasgow.

In 1897, it takes the management of the firm, employing thousands of people, then, after having discovered a new process of extraction, it founds “Nickel Mond Company” with Sudbury (Ontario) with the Canada; he becomes the “king of nickel”.

During the First World War, Lord Moulton appoints it “Chief of the Department of the Explosives of high power” to the ministry for the war, its factories become largest suppliers of TNT (more gas and masks), of the allies.

The December 6th 1922, it marries with London Marie-Louise Manac' H, which it attends since the end of the First World War. As from this day and until its death, it regularly will remain in Brittany, from where his new wife is originating, in particular with Beautiful-Isle-in-Ground and Dinard.

Robert Mond also worked as archeologist during 30 years, in Egypt, Palestine and Brittany. In 1927, it remains in Egypt, to Louqsor and directs the research tasks on the necropolis of Gournah.

In 1929 it is called by the Baron Surcouf to excavate the walk shady with Braided (Ille and Vilaine, Brittany, France), the shady walk is known under the name of Maison of Pretend it is located in the forest of Mesnil. The excavations will be made in 1931. Sculptures in relief, centres engraved and laid out in double pairs in north of the megalith, a skeleton is found thus that several potteries, a collar with steatite pearls, Have out of bronze of Domitien and two fragments of iron are also discovered. The June 3rd 1932, ennoblement by the king George V, it is made Knight bachelor . The following year, at the time of a voyage to Canada, it is made “honorary doctor” of the university of Toronto. In 1936, he is member of the board of directors of the Maison of Chemistry of Paris (and founder of the company of the Friend of the families of Chemistry), he is made Commandeur of the Légion of honor. The December 4th, Sir Robert is elected associated foreigner with the Académie of the inscriptions and the humanities. Member of the Royal Society in 1938, it dies on October 22nd.

More than one forty fabrics of Masters were given to the National Gallery London by the Mond. family
