Robert Kotcharian
Robert Sedraki Kotcharian is the President in exercise of the République of Arménie since April 1st 1998.
Robert Kotcharian was born the August 31st 1954 with Stepanakert then capital from the autonomous region from the Haut-Karabagh, a populated enclave of Armenians within the Soviet socialist Republic of Azerbaïdjan.
Kotcharian becomes President of the car-proclaimed Republic of Haut-Karabagh in 1994, then Prime Minister of Arménie the March 20th 1997. Following the resignation of President Levon For the third time Petrossian the February 3rd 1998, Kotcharian becomes President by interim. He is elected at this station the March 30th 1998 with 59,5% of the voices vis-a-vis the Communist candidate Karen Demirtchian. Kotcharian is re-elected at this station for five years the March 5th 2003 with 67,5% of the voices vis-a-vis Stepan Demirtchian, wire of Karen Demirtchian.
The positions ultra-nationalists of Kotcharian are his major political asset. It reigned on Haut-Karabagh by keeping its quarrelsome positions vis-a-vis the Azerbaïdjan and by subduing in an authoritative way any opposition to its capacity. Skilful policy it, in spite of its positions, succeeded in making remain the cease-fire in force since 1994 with the Azeri neighbor.
Former executive of the Communist party at the time of the Soviet Union, it is from now on independent of very party.
Some see the hand of Kotcharian behind the irruption the October 27th 1999 of a commando at the Parliament and the assassination of two rivals of Kotcharian: the president of the National Assembly Karen Demirtchian and the Prime Minister Vazguen Sargsian.
In April 2002, of the demonstrators protest against acquisition by close relations of Kotcharian of the independent television channel A1+ ; in August the national company of electricity is sold at an obscure finance company offshore oil rig .
