Robert Jules Trumpler
Robert Jules Trumpler (October 2nd 1886 - September 10th 1956, Berkeley, California) was an astronomer Suisse - American.
It was born with Zurich, in Suisse, where it made its first studies. It then left in Germany, where it obtained its doctorate in 1910. In 1915, during the First World War, it emigrated with the the United States, and joined the university of California. One entrusted to him a station with the Observatoire Allegheny, and later with the Observatoire Lick. In 1921, it was made naturalize American.
It is famous to have been the first to note in particular that the luminosity of the globular Amas S most distant weaker than was discounted, and than stars appeared redder. The explanation is the presence of interstellar clouds dispersed through the Galaxie S, which absorb part of the light. The globular clusters having been used to estimate the size of the Milky Way, this result led to a reduction compared to the preceding estimates of almost 40%.
Its name was given to a crater on the the Moon, and another on Mars, in its honor, as well as a price dedicated to the theses considered to be particularly significant in the field of astronomy, the Robert J. Trumpler Award
