Robert II of Artois

Robert II of Artois , wire posthumous of Robert I {{er}} and of Mathilde of the Brabant, becomes count d' Artois in 1250.

Biography

It took share with the crusade of Tunis in 1270, and showed a savage combatant, wanting to avenge his father who had been killed with the preceding crusade.

His/her White sister of Artois, wife of Henri Ier de Navarre, died in 1274 by leaving a three year old girl, took refuge in France in order to escape the fights for the capacity and regency. Philippe III Bold the entrusted to his/her cousin Robert d' Artois the responsibility to restore peace. It besieged and took Pampelune and restores the authority of the queen.

Following the Sicilian Vespers (1282), it went to Italy to help his/her uncle Charles I {{er}} of Anjou. With died of this last, it was named regent of the kingdom of Naples, Charles II being prisoner of king d' Aragon. But Charles II, become again free, concludes an arrangement with king d' Aragon and Robert, courroucé, left Italy in 1287.

Philippe IV Beautiful the sent it to fight the English in Guyenne (1296), then in Flanders. Robert beat the Flemings with Furnes in 1297, but his/her son Philippe who fought at his sides there was seriously wounded and died one year afterwards.

Robert was killed with the battles of Courtrai the July 11th 1302.

Its succession was disputed between his/her daughter Mahaut and its grandson Robert III.

Marriages and children

He married in first weddings in 1262 Amicie de Courtenay (1250 - † 1275), girl of Pierre de Courtenay (1218 - † 1250), lord of Conches and Mehun, and Perrenelle de Joigny, girl of Left-handed person of Joigny; they had the following children:

It remarie in second weddings in 1277 with Agnes de Dampierre (1237 - † 1288), girl of Archambaud IX of Bourbon, lord of Bourbon and Yolande de Châtillon, countess of Nevers.

Lastly, he marries in third weddings Marguerite d' Avesnes († 1342), girl of Jean Ier d' Avesnes count de Hainaut and of Philippa of Luxembourg.
