Robert Harding Whittaker

Robert Harding Whittaker is a ecologist and a American Botaniste , born in 1920 with Wichita with the Kansas and died in 1980.

It obtains its Bachelor off Arts in Washburn Municipal College (today the Université of Washburn) with Topeka. After its military service, it obtains its pH. D. with the University of Illinois. It obtains a station of teaching and research at the university of State of Washington with Hanford, then in the national laboratories of Hanford (where it is one of the pioneers of the use of radioactive tracers for the study of the ecosystems), in Brooklyn College,) the the University of California and, finally, with the Université Cornell.

Very productive, Whittaker develops and promotes the gradual analysis applied to the ecology of the vegetable communities. This analysis makes it possible to obtain empirical results contradicting some of the ideas on the development of the plants supported by Frederic Edward Clements (1874-1945). Whittaker studies especially the analysis of the vegetable communities, their succession and their productivity. It is the first to propose a classification of alive in five reigns: Animal, Vegetable, Mushroom, Protiste and Monère.

Whittaker is elected with National Academy off Sciences in 1974, it is preceded by the Ecological Society off America in 1980, among other rewards.

It directs many doctorands in ecology: Walter Westman, Robert Peet (currently in University off North Carolina), Susan Bratton, Thomas Wentworth (current in North Carolina State University), Owen Sholes, Mark Wilson (currently in Oregon State University), Linda Olsvig Whittaker and Kerry Woods.
