Robert Giffen

Robert Giffen (1837 - 1910) is an Irish economist.

Its studies made it possible to highlight a new type of good to which it gave its name: the Well Giffen.

He discovered this type of good by studying the Irish behavior following a rise of the Prix of the potatoes. He noted that the Purchasing power of people decreased at the same time as the price of potatoes increased. That affected their consumption: he consumed less other types of goods but more potatoes because that remained the good all the same the least expensive.

A Bien Giffen is thus one although one consumes more when its price increases.
