Robert Fripp

Robert Fripp (born the May 16th 1946 in the Dorset) is a British Guitariste made famous to have founded a group of progressive Rock: King Crimson .

Biography

After having the group King Crimson in 1974 dissolves, and until its reformation in 1981, Fripp takes part in albums of David Bowie ( Heroes ), of Peter Gabriel and Brian Eno. It engages also a career solo: in opposition to the current dominating of the progressive rock'n'roll of which it has a presentiment of the decline, it wants to be a small mobile and intelligent unit . Its style, characterized by what one could call " complex melodies built on melodies simples" , the improvisation like creative process integrates. The sound of guitar will be very worked, with an intensive use of electronics, or on the contrary without effect, naked, neutral. In the optics of the music minimalist, it creates in collaboration with Brian Eno the system of " Frippertronics" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frippertronics, with an electric guitar, a fuzzbox and two tape recorders, allowing to build on line true cathedrals of sounds (" Let the power fall" 1981, " God save the king" 1985). Later, Frippertronics, directed by computer, will become Soundscapes, less serene, sometimes morbid, as in " The Spoil Paradise" off; (1997), which proposes a true crossing of death to us.

Become professor of guitar, it animates training courses Guitar Craft and creates concerts making it possible to integrate guitarists of all levels. Several discs testify to this period, in particular " The League off Crafty Guitarists" (1995), for sixteen electric guitarists. The tuning used by Fripp is different from the traditional standart. It is based on the tuning of the violoncello: C-Ground-D-The-Semi-ground (C, G, D, has, E, G) which allows a larger téssiture of the instrument.

Before the second reformation of King Crimson to beginning of the year 90, he collaborates with David Sylvian for a series of albums and concerts like with other musicians of different backgrounds.

He founded a production structure and of distribution of musical projects which manages the interests of King Crimson and many other musicians: Mobile Discipline Total.

Its very particular play of guitar was worth to him to take part in a series in concerts G3 with Joe Satriani and Steve Vai.

Recently, Robert Fripp composed the sounds of the new operating system of Microsoft, Windows Vista.

Robert Fripp is married with the singer Toyah Wilcox.
