Robert Folger Thorne

Robert Folger Thorne , born in 1920 in the New Jersey is a American Botaniste .

Biography

He is pilot of bombarbier B-24 during the Second world war. Its apparatus is cut down during a mission aiming at the Austria, protected by resistant Croatian, it can regain the American Italy and troops. It leaves the army to become linguist, it obtains its Master off Sciences in 1942 and its doctorate in 1949 with the Université Cornell. It then spends thirteen years to the Université of State of Iowa

In 1950, it succeeds William Arthur Anderson (1900-1949) like conservative of the herbarium Ada Hayden of the university of Iowa In 1952, Thorne estimates the size of the herbarium at 143.000 specimens. In 1962, when it leaves the university of Iowa and the herbarium, one estimates that it enriched the herbarium by 27.000 new specimens. It then takes the direction of the Botanical garden of Rancho Santa Anna where it succeeds Peter Hamilton Raven (1936-). It receives the famous collection of Cactée S of Lyman David Benson (1909-1993) after this one took its retirement.

He is the author of the Classification of Thorne, one of large the traditional classifications of the plants to flowers (Angiospermes) in 1992 then in 2000.
