Robert Delaunay was born with Paris in 1885 and died in Montpellier in 1941. Married to Sonia Delaunay (1885 - 1979), painter also and which one can see works with the National museum of modern art.

Childhood

Just like Sonia, Robert Delaunay was virtually adopted. His/her parents divorced when it was nine years old. Robert never knew really where was his/her father, while his/her mother, eccentric, were interested more in remote voyages rather to her offspring. Thus, it was placed in a sister of its mother and her husband. Educated in a middle-class medium, Robert quickly opposed this lifestyle, choosing very early to devote his life to Article.

Artistic beginnings

In the circle of friends of its uncle, the contemporary art was object of derision. Robert did not hesitate to defend Cézanne and Gauguin. In the school, it was interested only in the Dessin and the Natural history, which was worth to him to be excluded for Paresse. He asserted that neither his/her uncle nor nobody could prevent it from being a Artiste. He started during two years as a Apprenti in the scenic design. It is there that it developed its taste for large surfaces which became a characteristic many later work.

In 1904 and 1905, it produced its first paintings: Landscapes and Flowers. The influence of the neo-impressionist and the fawn-coloured was notable at Delaunay. In 1906, it made its Military service with Laon where, fascinated by the Cathédrale, it made many Croquis.

End 1906, it returned to Paris, and presented the electric horse-gear to the Salon of autumn which refused it. It decided as from this moment never not to expose to this living room. In 1907, with Paris, it visited many museums and entered the group of young artists seeking an art nouveau among which Metzinger, the Falconer and Leger. Obnubilated by the Cathedrals, he undertook an important work on Monument S of Paris which he named Ville of Paris or the City. This personal research is based on the Couleur. Its fabric, Paris - Saint-Severin , of 1909, is the starting point of the theory of Delaunay on the color.

Meet with Sonia

Beginning 1909, Robert Delaunay met Sonia Terk, of name of birth Sarah Stern, married then with Wilhelm Uhde recently. They became lovers in April of the same year. Sonia divorced its first husband, and as it was pregnant of Robert, they did not wait to marry. It was on November 15th 1909. January 18th 1910, they had a son, Charles.

Evolution of its work

In 1910, influenced by the Cubism, Robert Delaunay reduced his panel of colors, until quasi the monochromy. Gradually, it reintroduced the color, partly under the influence of his wife.
