Robert Crumb is a draftsman of Cartoon American, born with Philadelphia the August 30th 1943. It is one of the figureheads of the cartoon underground since the Années 1960.
Biography
When the movement Hippie developed, it arrived at San Francisco and met many draftsmen like Gilbert Shelton and Spain Rodriguez.
It published its first drawings in the Zap Comix in 1967, but its passion for the cartoon is older. With his Maxon younger brother and under the influence of its elder Charles, it draws enormously and very early.
Its most famous heroes are Fritz the cat ( Fritz the Cat ), a cat ribald, Mister Natural, cynical guru, It drew small pockets of discs, of which most famous is Cheap Thrills of Big Brother and the Holding Company/Janis Joplin.
Ralph Bakshi made to an adaptation of Fritz the cat in Cartoon, one of the first cartoons for adult. Crumb always regarded the result as a failure and does not want to be associated there, it is besides after the exit of the cartoon that it decides to make assassinate its Fritz hero by an ostrich, with an ice pick.
Its style is inspired by that of the engraver William Hogarth but also by the traditional draftsmen of the American cartoon, such as E.C. Segar, Rudolph Dirks, George Herriman, Walt Disney and Floyd Gottfredson. Its sets of themes, very often caricatured, are of a great richness. It is first of all the Jean-Jacques Rousseau of the cartoon, confessing her inhibitions, its phantasms, its relational difficulties, its frustrations, its sournesses, short all that there can be of dead loss under the condition of man. Its lack of kindness and its honesty are total and make it reject by a certain public which finds the exposure of certain realities or certain imaginations well too obscenes. Learning that Robert Crumb was made " Grand Prix of the town of Angoulême" , the scenario writer-draftsman Greg had been indignant that a Has-been which (thought he wrongly) did not draw any more, obtained such an important honorary distinction: “Crumb, precentor of the underground, was, with Gilbert Shelton, the large specialist in " comic-books" laughing piquouze, volutes of the shit, enormous and hairy sex, colossal udders and excrement all formats. That made laugh in its time all those which saw there a revenge against the parents, the cops, the Masters, the established order, the good taste, etc It is not new. Only, it has been twenty years that the wave fell down” ( the Letter of Dargaud , 1999)
Crumb in addition delivers a historical testimony to us over the period known as " psychédélique" , on the experiments of LSD, the sexual release - that it could live itself only once become célèbre.
Its work is traversed by a great nostalgia: in the change, he only sees what is lost and tries by the drawing to testify to its country, of the blues of the Années 1930, the vestimentary changes, etc
He is completely except system: he did not touch one hundred for the cartoon of Fritz the cat and refused to draw a small pocket for Rolling Stones, because he did not like their music.
In 1994, the scenario writer Terry Zwigoff turned Crumb , a documentary film devoted to the career of Robert Crumb, its life and its family.
En 1999, it was seen allotting the Grand Prix of the town of Angouleme for the whole of its work.
He lives in France since 1993, with Sauve in the Gard, with his wife Aline Kominsky-Crumb. He plays of the Banjo and the Mandoline in the group the Primitive ones of the future.
