Robert Cleaves
Major-general Robert Cleaves, first Baron Clive of Plassey (September 29th 1725 Market Drayton - November 22nd 1774), Pair of Ireland, governor of the Bengal.
Born in the county from Shrop. It raised with the more high degree of prosperity the English Compagnie of the Eastern Indies, seized Arcot in 1750, of Calcutta in 1755, drove out the French ports of the Gange, gained over the natives a decisive victory with the Bataille of Plassey, 1757, and forced all the Nabab S of the Bahar, Bengal and the Orissa to recognize the English domination. Robert Clive became member of Royal Society the November 24th 1768.
In spite of its services, he saw in 1773, with his return in England, shown misappropriation: the House of Commons declared it innocent; nevertheless it was so highly affected of such a charge that in its despair it gave itself death, in 1774.
