Robert Caplain

Robert Caplain is a Sound engineer French, mainly specialized in recording in natural acoustics.

Author of a work who makes authority and which brings answers to the problems arising from the recording, Techniques of sound recording at Dunod (5th edition, April 2007), it worked at the sides of the largest artists musicians of jazz, of Miles Davis to BB King, of Lionel Hampton with Gerry Mulligan, while passing by Keith Jarrett, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Dizzy Gillespie, the Art together of Chicago, David Sanborn, Dee Dee Bridgewater and Sarah Vaughan… Into traditional: Lily Laskyne, György Cziffra, Yvry Gitlis, Roger Muraro… With prestigious units: 2e2m, the Intercontemporain Unit, Percussions of Strasbourg…

Its work was worth to him to divide two Victoires of the music (opera and modern music) with the type-setters or interpreters (of which the pianist Roger Muraro), two Grands Prix of the Académie Charles Cros (variety and modern music) and to obtain the price of the disc of the year 1999.

He collaborated in the cinema and the theater as a sound designer, like for the recordings of the musics of many feature-length films of which " Misérables" of Robert Hossein (music composed by Michel Magne).

He was realizer and producer of many phonographies written by Michel Rivgauche, for: Jean Rochefort, Jean Piat, Paul Préboist, Jacques Dufliho, Francoise Fabian, Elisabeth Huppert, Micheline Presle, Jacques Fabbri, Madeleine Robinson, Marie-Jose Nat, Marina Vlady…

Acoustics expert (graduate of International Institute off Acoustic and Vibrations of the University the Auburn one - the USA), musician, international lecturer and pedagog (Normalien, it was in charge of teaching with Paris X and Paris VII). Former Director of studies of the University of Audio-visual Realization, it is since 2006 Academic Director of the International institute of the image and the sound (3IS) of which he was the Director of the Initial training of 1990 to 2005.

He also published: - “the education of the ear” (three works) at ISTRA - “nature and environment” at ISTRA - Sets of themes Publications: the sound with the cinema, psychoanalyzes sound, the ear, hearing, the sound landscape, televisual stereophony, the sound and the direction, the sound diffusion, stereophony and its diffusion as a cinema, field sound and cinema, the compact disk, analogical and numerical, sound archeology, the physiological compensation, the tape recorders, the sound recording and the distribution of the tracks.

Author of articles for the press: 0vu magazine, Video Music System, Sound system, Discotheque club, Night Show, the Dispatch of Tahiti.

Research activities: - Collaborator of research to CNRS (physical Laboratory of mechanics), Committee “noises and vibrations” and “urban psychoacoustics” - Study of the relations between painting and the sound - Architectural Acoustics among the Egyptians, the Greeks and Romans - Acoustics and symbolic system of the Romance and Gothic religious buildings
