Robert-Henri Bautier
Robert-Henri Emile Bautier is a historian medievist born the April 19th 1922 with Paris. He is member of the Institut.
Course
Robert-Henri Bautier between with the School of the charters in 1939: it writes a thesis entitled there the exercise of public justice in the Carolingian Empire which enables him to obtain the diploma of Archiviste paleographer in 1943. Named archivist with the Public records, it is detached with the French École of Rome (1943-1944) then is in charge of research in Italy for CNRS of 1945 to 1948. It takes part in consecutive administrative missions with the modification of the Italian border (member of the French delegation for the execution of the clauses of files of the peace treaty Franco-Italian of 1947 (1948), and delegated to the handing-over of the files of Savoy and Nice to France (1949-1952)).It then takes again its station of conservative of files, initially with the Public records then with the Direction of the files of France, and like in charge of the Service of the Studies and the international training course of the Files (1948-1958).
Initially in charge of a cycle of conference of the School of the charters, it is named there professor of diplomatic and archivistic (1961-1990) then professor in excess (1990-1992). He is the author of articles on the diplomatic one, sigillography, the files medieval and the production of the acts to the Middle Ages.
He is elected member of the Académie of the inscriptions and the humanities in 1974.
He is, in addition, in charge of the control of the Museum of the castle of Langeais (1986-1991), and, as a member of the Institute, conservative of the royal Abbey of Chaalis (1992-2000).
He was member of very many learned societies, in particular the Société of the French history, the National company of the antique dealers of France, the French company of heraldic and sigillography, or Monumenta Germaniæ Historica (he was president of the three first). He is member of the royal Académie of Belgium and several other foreign academies. He, also, was member of the Comité of historical and scientific work, of many commissions on the files, the diplomatic one and sigillography.
