Roanoke island

The Île of Roanoke is located close to the coasts of the North Carolina at the the United States. It depends on the county of Dare.

It belongs to the Outer Banks, between the United States of the Atlantic Ocean. The island measures 13 km out of 3 and has a surface of 48.46 km ². The population was of: 6724 inhabitants in 2000.

It shelters the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site .

The island has a historical interest, since Sir Walter Raleigh founded there the first permanent colony at the end of the 16th century.

History

The first colony

At the 16th century, the island of Roanoke was the territory of the colony of Roanoke. The first English colony in the Nouveau world was then named Virginia, in the honor of the queen Elisabeth I {{Re}}, called the “  queen vierge  ” because she had never married.

A first attempt at establishment turned short. When Sir Francis Drake came in Roanoke after having attacked the Spanish colony of St Augustine, the totality of the population turned over with this last in England.

A second attempt took place in 1587, due to John White. But the war between England and the Spain was disastrous for the colony.

The battle of Roanoke Island

During the American Civil War, the island was strengthened by the Confédérés. The battle of Roanoke Island (February 7th and 8th 1862) is an event of the countryside in North Carolina which the general Ambrose E. Burnside from January led in July 1862. Following the battle, the three forts confederated of the island were taken definitively by the Armée with the Union and debaptized.
