Roanoke

Roanoke is a city independent of the the Commonwealth of Virginia (the United States). The town of Roanoke is close to Salem, of Vinton; it is also surrounded by the Comté of Roanoke; they are however politically separate. At the time of the census of 2000, the city counted 94911 inhabitants.

The Bureau of the census of the United States includes in the metropolitan zone of Roanoke the counties of Botetourt, Franklin, Craig and Roanoke, and the towns of Salem and Roanoke. It was reported that the population of the metropolitan zone in the three last censuses is:

  • 1980 --- 220.393
  • 1990 --- 224.477
  • 2000 --- 235.932
  • 2005 (estimate) --- 292.983
It should be noted that the figures for 2000 do not include the County of Franklin (50345 inhabitants (estimate) in 2005) and the County of Craig (5154 inhabitants (estimate) in 2005). These figures were recently added to Roanoke MSA (Metropolitan Statistical Area).
