Roads of Brazil

There exist two highway types to the Brésil: the federal roads , managed by the federal government, and the local roads , managed by the various States of the federative Republic of Brazil.

Federal roads

The Brazilian federal roads are presented by a symbol made up of the letters " BR" , of an indent and three digits. They are divided into five categories: radial road , longitudinal road , transverse road , diagonal road and road of connection .

Radial roads

A radial Route (radial Rodovia) is the name received by the Brazilian federal Roads which start from Brasília, towards the extreme points of the country, Mer or Frontière.

The direction of mileage starts starting from the road Ring of Brasília, the Kilomètre Zero of each State being at the point of Rout federal nearest to the federal capital.

  • Primier quantifies: 0 (zero)
  • Other figures: classification can vary from 10 to 90, being always multiples of 10 being established in the time Sens on the road Ring.

Longitudinal roads

A longitudinal Route is the name received by the Brazilian federal Roads which cross the country in the Northern direction - Southern. Mileage is done in this direction, with the single exceptions of BR-163 and BR-174 which is seen directed towards North.

  • Primeiro criffre: 1 (one)
  • Other figures: classification varies from 00 to 49 on the part of the country which goes from the extreme Is country with Brasília, and from 50 to 99 between the Capital and the extreme Western.

Transverse roads

A transverse Route (transverse Rodovia) is the name received by the Brazilian federal Roads which traverse the country in the direction Is - Western. Mileage is done in this direction.

  • Nomenclature: Br-2xx

  • First figure: 2 (two)
  • Other figures: classification varies from 00 to 49, on the part of the country which goes from the Northern extreme of the country to Brasília. Varied from 50 has 99 between the Capital and the extreme Southern.

Diagonal roads

A Diagonal Route (diagonal Rodovia) is the name received by the Brazilian federal Roads which cross the country in the North-western direction - South-east or the North-East - South-west. Mileage is done in this direction.

  • Other figures: classification can vary from 01 to 99.

Roads of connection

A Route of connection (Rodovia of ligação) is the name received by the Brazilian federal Roads which connect two federal roads between them, a road with a close locality, the international borders or which cannot be classified elsewhere.

  • Other figures: classification can vary from 01 to 99.
