River of the Pearls

The Zhu Jiang , (珠江 Pinyin: Zhu Jiang), or “river of the Pearls”, is the name given to the 177 km long lower course consisted the junction of 3 rivers. Its overall length of: 2200 km make of it the third Fleuve of the China after the Yangzi Jiang (Yangtsé Kiang) and the Huang He. It is in second place for the flow after Yangzi.

The river of the Pearls is also known under the name of Yue Jiang (粵江) “river of Guangdong”. It holds its name of a named island “island of the pearl of sea” (海珠) which existed before in the middle of the bed of the river. This island does not exist any more because of the change of the course of the river.

The river of the Pearls is consisted the convergence of the rivers Xi Jiang (西江) “the river of the West”, EIB Jiang (北江) “the river of north”, and Dong Jiang (东江) “the river of the East”. The river and its principal affluent Xi Jiang cross the provinces of the Guangdong, the Guangxi, the Yunnan and the Guizhou, and partially those of the Hunan and the Jiangxi, taking the form of a Basson of a surface of: 409480 km ² (珠江流域).

It is thrown in the China Sea of the South between HongKong and Macao, by the Delta of the river of the Pearls which it divides with several other rivers.

Various facts

  • a large cable with high voltage of 500 K V, suspended to three large pylons among highest of the world, crosses the river close to its estuary.
  • the brewery of Zhujiang, one of the three larger Brewery S of China, is located on the delta of the river in the town of Guangzhou.
