River navigation

The river navigation could be defined as art to move a vehicle on an inland waterway, Rivière arranged or channel. The exercise of this art must be done in the compliance with certain rules, resulting from ancestral practices of Navigation and comprising very specific characteristics. One usually distinguishes commercial navigation and the pleasure sailing.

Warping

the technique of the Touage consists of the traction of a train of Péniche S by a boat-winch the warping . On the Seine, the " C.G.T.V.N." (general company of traction on inland waterways) exploited a great number of these tug boats. It was replaced by C.G.Poussage V.N.

The river convoys are made up:

  • By a Boat pusher: This boat has as a function to push and operate the train of barges. This one, moored with the back of the convoy by steel wire ropes, tightened by winches of strong power behaves as a unit supplements of which the length borders the 180 meters length on the inland waterways with large gauge. The pushers have a power being able to exceed 3000 ch, distributed on several engines, themselves involving of the propellers having often four rudders, two front backs and two, said " flanking" , allowing very particular maneuvres.
  • By barges whose dimensions can vary. However the current heavy tendency is to conceive units with dimensions standardized in order to optimize the capacities of heavy transport which offers the water way. It is not rare to associate several barges, into broad like longitudinally in order to constituting a convoy " séparable".

The total width of a convoy is primarily established according to the gauge of the lock S to pass. For example: Up to 23 m of width on the the Rhine and the north of the Belgium. The river convoys are esssentiellements used to transport materials in bulk such as aggregates, cereals, hydrocarbons… Their tonnage can go up to 25000 tons per convoy what in fact means of transport very adapted for materials of strong density and not requiring too much of " ruptures of charge".
