Rishiri island

The island of Rishiri (利尻島, rishiritō ) is an island of the Japan which is located apart from the sea of Japan, to broad of Hokkaidō. The island of Rishiri ets formed by an extinguished volcanic cone, the Rishiri mount. With the island of Rebun and the island of Sarobetsu, Rishiri forms the national park of Rishiri-Rebun-Sarobetsu. The economic main activities of the island are fishing and tourism. The island has a circumference of 63 km and a surface of 183 km ²

The island can be joined by boat since Wakkanai and Otaru and by plane since Wakkanai.

In 1848, Ranald MacDonald, the first man to have taught English in Japan posed the foot on the island.
