Riquet with the bunch
Riquet with the bunch is a popular tale, whose most famous version is that of Charles Perrault, published with the Contes of my mother Oye in 1697.
Name
Three assumptions would explain the name of Riquet:-
Perrault thinks malicieusement of the Riquetti family, whose name was francized in Riquet. Pierre-Paul Riquet, protected from Jean-Baptiste Colbert, was the promoter of the Canal of Languedoc.
- Catherine Bernard, author of a previous version which inspired Perrault, was Norman. However, Littré, in its article “Riquet with the Bunch”, precise: “etymology: that into Norman, riquet wants to say counterfeited, uneven” is said.
- Some finally see in this nickname the diminutive of Henriquet, small Henri.
History
It was once, in an extremely remote kingdom, a queen who was confined of a very ugly child. But a fairy which was with its birth said to the queen that, if his/her son would be ugly, it would have also much spirit and he could inform of it its liked well. At the end of seven or eight years, the queen of a nearby kingdom was confined of two little girls. The first was the very pretty but fairy said to the queen that it would have little spirit. The second was very ugly but it would have as well spirit as nobody would realize his ugliness. Both could transmit or their beauty or their spirit to that which they would marry. As they grew, one was interested only in the gifted princess of spirit and nobody or almost noticed the beautiful princess. One day when the beautiful princess withdrew herself in a wood to cry, she saw a very ugly man. It was Riquet with the bunch, which comforted it and asked it in marriage to be able to give him spirit in addition to its beauty. The princess had if little spirit which it accepted to marry in one year day for day and Riquet transmitted him its spirit as the fairy had given him the capacity of it. All the young princes of the kingdom went to his meeting because it was beautiful and had become intelligent, but it refused their hands because it wanted to reflect before making a decision. Then it turned over in wood to reflect. Suddenly the ground opened under its feet and a kitchen filled people emerges from ground. That made one year exactly which it had promised its hand with Riquet, it was necessary that they marry, but Riquet had a little evil to convince the princess. However, it succeeds there by reminding the Princess that she also had a gift: that to give the beauty to his/her husband. This one yielded and they married with the assent of the father of the princess. They lived happy and had many children.
A tale with the mode
It took as a starting point a Conte writes with the niece Corneille. The selected topic corresponds to the literary and gallant mode, of the living rooms where the Amour is the subject of passionate debates. The Métamorphose in love is one of the privileged reasons for the gallant and invaluable literature with the idea, that the love gives the spirit and the love to all that it touches. The Morale of Perrault, is that the Beauté moral or physical exists only in the eyes of the spectator. Riquet seems a gallant Prince, equipped with good mannerss, eloquence and refinement. It incarnates the ideal love of which the Précieuse S dream, inherited the Courtly love of the Middle Ages, which mistakes vulgarity and the sensual love. This image of the gallant, invaluable love joined the chart of the representation of the Carte of Tightening, imagined by Madeleine de Scudéry in Clelie .
