Rio Uruguay

The river Uruguay (or Río Uruguay ) is a river of South America.

Geography

It finds its source in the Serra Geral to 1.800 m of altitude to the Brésil. It runs north towards the south on 1.600 km and is thrown with the Río Paraná in the Estuaire named Río of Plata. Its basin extends on 370.000 km ². Its total unevenness is of 24 cm/km.

The first part of its course is fast and not very navigable. But starting from its confluence Río Cuareim (which is at the same time, the northern limit between the Brésil and the Uruguay) its course is occupied by many islands and bottoms rock funds, there are also important outcrops of basalt which determine the saltos Grande there Chico (literally small and large the Cataracte S).

The medium flow of the river on the level of the town of Salto is of 4.622 m ³ /s. the maximum recorded since 1898 was established during the year 1992 with 37.714 m ³ /s. the minimal flow recorded since the same year is of 109 m ³ /s and it was recorded during the year 1945 (for the period of dryness of 1920 with 1970).

The width widens then and water runs less quickly at nival towns of Paysandú and Fray Bentos where a wearing of deep water was established just like in Nueva Palmira.

It is useful on part of its course of Land borders between Argentina and Brazil and of Land borders between Argentina and Uruguay.
