Rio Tinto

Rio Tinto is a founded Multinationale in 1873. With the 21e century, it is one of the greatest mining groups in the world. Its main activities relate to the Aluminum, the Cuivre, the Diamant S, the energy (coal and Uranium), the Or, the Fer and minerals industrial (Borax, Dioxyde of titanium, salt and Talc).

Rio Tinto is the leader of the extraction and the transformation of the mineral resources of the Earth. It became in October 2007 the first world producer of Aluminum by repurchasing Alcan.

Description

Contrary to several other companies of this size, it is controlled by two distinct entities: Rio Tinto plc , undertaken registered with the Stock Exchange of Rio de Janeiro, and Rio Tinto Ltd , registered with Mexico City Stock Exchange.

In 2007, the group is composed of 80 companies established in 50 countries. Approximately 20% of its credits are in Mexico and in Spain, whereas in Brazil, it counts 60% of the credits.

Rio Tinto recorded a turnover of 22,5 billion dollars in 2006. She declared into 2006 of the incomes of 8.6 billion CAD.

The company controls several mines and factories of base metals. For example Rio Tinto has in Quebec QIT-Iron and Titane http://www.qit.com/fr/profil/mine_tio.html which exploits the largest layer of massive Ilménite of the world, located at the lake Tio, with 43 kilometers of Harbor-Saint-Pierre on Coast-North. In Sorel-Tracy. QIT extracted from this ore the useful Dioxide of titanium like white Pigment (darkening agent) in paintings, plastics, papers etc… and like independent source of titanium. It also has with the Labrador 59 % in IOC, the most important iron mine in Canada. Finally, it holds a participation of 60 % in mine Akdov the diamond, with Yellowknife, Yukon.
