Rio Potenji

The Rio Potenji (or Rio Potengi ) is a Brazilian river of the State of the Rio Grande C Norte. It takes its source on the territory of the municipality of Cerro Corá. It is the principal river of the State. It sprinkles the communes of Cerro Corá, São Tomé, Barcelona, São Paulo C Potengi, São Pedro, Ielmo Marinho, São Gonçalo C Amaranth and Natal, where its delta mingles its water with those with the Atlantic Ocean. It divides the town of Native into its zones North and South. Most of its course is intermitant, because of the frequent écheresses in the area Nordeste.

It was used by the colonizers to penetrate the interior of the grounds of the place. Those called it " Rio Grande" , due to its broad bed and its extension, passing the name with the Harbor office of the Rio Grande C Norte.

Observations

Although Potengi is often used ( to see photo opposite ), the correct C-W communication is Potenji because the rules of the Portuguese language prescribe the use of the letter " J " for the words of origin Tupi, with regard to the syllables " ge" and " gi". With the wire of time, the writing was Potengy , Potengi and, finally Potenji . But the law of the State of Ceará n° 3786, of the September 4th 1957 fixed the name of one of its municipalities, Potengi, in this form, which maintains confusion. The name means in tupi " River of the Shrimp s".
