The Gregorian calendar proleptic is produced by prolonging the Gregorian Calendrier at the dates preceding its official introduction in 1582.
By using the system of Roman Numération, which does not include Zero, it is traditional to represent the years preceding 1 as “1 before Jesus-Christ”, an etc In this system the year 1 before Jesus-Christ would be a Leap year, as in the Calendrier Julien proleptic.
By using a numbering system which includes zero, it is more convenient to include one year zero and to represent the years former as a negative number. It is the convention used in the astronomical Gregorian Calendrier. In this system year 0, equivalent to 1 before Jesus-Christ, is one leap year.
It should be noted that, because before 1582 the Calendrier Julien was used, the historians prefer to employ the Julien calendar. One must thus explicitly declare that a date is given according to the Gregorian calendar proleptic when this one is employed.
