Rimicaris exoculata

The Crevette Rimicaris exoculata belongs to the family of the Alvinocarididae (??? or Bresiliidae ???) gathering shrimps living close to the hydrothermal sites along the oceanic dorsal . Rimicaris exoculata is met only on the level of the hydrothermal sites of the Atlantique.

The shrimp Rimicaris exoculata measurement approximately 5 cm length and has the effect of being deprived of eyes. It is very abundant on the walls of the hydrothermal chimneys, forming communities of several tens of thousands of individuals (on average approximately 2.500 individus/m ²). She lives in an environment with a temperature fluctuating between 10 and 30°C. The carapace and the oral opening of Rimicaris are covered with filamentous Bactérie S. The cavity branchiale is also covered with a microbial carpet. The role of these micro-organisms still unknown and is currently studied: the bacteria could maintain a relation mutualism with shrimp.
