Right Lipse

Right Lipse , Joost Lips or Justus Lipsius, born with Overijse (Duché of the Brabant) the October 18th 1547 and deceased with Leuwen the March 24th 1606, is a Philologue and Humaniste which lived in what was then the Spanish Netherlands, future Belgium.

Great nephew of the scholar Martin Lipse, died in 1555, Juste Lipse made his studies with Brussels, Ath and the college of the Jésuites of Cologne from where his/her parents withdrew it, for fear it did not enter to the Jesuits, to send it to grant its Leuwen, but it preferred to be directed towards the humanities. He followed, as secretary, the cardinal of Granvelle to Rome where he followed the courses of Marc-Antoine Muret with which its extraordinary memory enabled him soon to compete.

He returned to Leuwen and travelled, sharing his life between the studies, teaching and the pleasures. He converts with the Luthéranisme, but its works political Considérations and especially Of una religione , in which he preached the need for a Religion single and exclusive, seemed advances made with the catholic party and made it suspect to the eyes of reformed. It then solved to leave the Holland, and under pretext of disease, it went to Spa, from where it sent its resignation of the Université of Leyde. In 1591, it publicly made act of accession to the Catholic religion.

In spite of the many offers of posts of teacher arriving of all the Europe, it preferred the town of Leuwen. It became also Historiographe of Philippe II of Spain and adviser of the archduke Albert. It published many works on very diverse subjects, religion, Politique, Philosophie, Antiquité. It also left a very vast correspondence.

One says that it was, to the daily newspaper, pleasant, in spite of accesses of melancholy. He hated the Musique, but loved much the dogs and the flowers, mainly the tulips. This is why Rubens represented it with tulips behind him and its dog Saphir with its feet.

He died of a liver disease.

The seat of the Conseil of the European Union to Brussels bears its name because a street Juste Lipse was at this place until the construction of this building in 1985. A massive bust of Right Lipse is in the hall of the building of the Council.
