The Riel is the name of the monetary unit of the Kampuchea. Its international code ISO 4217 is KHR. Its management is ensured by the national Banque of Kampuchea.

Its foreign exchange rate is approximately 5100 riels for a Euro (January 2005), a not very important black-market of the currency exists, the American dollar is accepted everywhere at the rather stable rate of 4120 riels for a dollar (2006). The Baht inhabitant of Thailand is accepted in the big cities and close to the border inhabitant of Thailand, especially for the large sums.

The riel is theoretically divided into 100 SEN, but because of its low value, this subdivision became obsolete and the circulation of the coins ceased for a long time. The smallest tickets circulating are those of 50 riels.

In 2000, the emission of coins of 100,200 and 500 riels was tried but they did not circulate and the experiment was abndonnée. In 1994, parts of 50,100,200 and 500 riels had been emitted with a similar failure.

Until independence, the currency of Kampuchea under French protectorate was the Piastre of trade.
