Riddim

A riddim is a musical sequence forming the base of a song. Often played by the low one or the keyboard, it has as a characteristic to be re-used multiple times. For example when one listens to the title " Stir It Up" of Bob Marley and " Coil So Nice" of Junior Kelly, the musical sequence at the base of the two songs is identical. Another example of Riddim is given in the title " Sreeming" of Lutan Fyah and " Firm Up Yuh Self" of Chezidek, it is Triumphant Riddim which was used for the two songs

The term Riddim , deformation of English Rhythm ( rate/rhythm ) comes from the patois jamaïcain. Knowing that in English the verb to wrinkle means to overlap, the riddim term is a Up-full sound which points out the idea of " rate/rhythm with chevaucher" what corresponds well to the action of the singer who poses his voice on the sound.

A riddim is traditionally named by the title of the first piece to use it, however the majority of the current series (a batch from two to ten 45 turns leaves at the same time on same the riddim with different singers and deejays) name them riddim with the title headlight of this series, none the pieces not being able to be regarded as being the “first” of the series.

History perhaps much more complex with for example Billie Jean riddim, thus named because having been used as support with the Shinehead artist to sing there the song of Michael Jackson. The melody has nothing to do with that of the tube of Mr. Jackson, but the riddim carries the same title. This base line comes from the Safari title of Lloyd Charmers & the Hippy Boys (makes of it part of the futures Wailers), itself a resumption of Get has Lick de Bumps Oakley for Studio One.
