Rick Hillier
The General Richard " Rick" J. Hillier , CM, CSM, CD, B.Sc (born in 1955) is the chief of staff of defense of the Canadian Armed forces.
Born and raised in Campbellton, in the Bay Notre-Dame with Ground-New-and-Labrador, it receives its diploma with the Université Memorial of Newfoundland in 1975 with a science Baccalauréat. It was posted with its first Régiment, the eighth regiment of the Canadian hussard S of the Louise Princess to Petawawa in Ontario, and thereafter with the Canadian royal Dragons. It was also used as a Cadre of staff at the general headquarters of the mobile Force with Saint-Hubert with the Quebec and to the district-general of national defense for Ottawa.
In 1998, he becomes the ordering deputy-general of the third body armed with the American Armée with Fort Hood with the Texas. In January 1998, always with the QGDN, it controls the operation RECOVERY, the intervention ds Canadian forces at the time of paralyzing the Tempête of glaze of 1998 in Ontario, with the Quebec and the New Brunswick.
The May 30th 2003, it is named chief of staff of the Army, ordering the Canadian Armée. It had before ordered the multinational division of south-west in Bosnia-Herzégovine. After its period spent to the head of the being and Army named with the head of the staff of defense, it ordered the International force of assistance to safety (TRUSTED) in Afghanistan, of the February 9th to the August 12th 2004. Over there, it introduces the Canadian method of the 3D of safety: defense, Diplomacy and development.
Loquacious, of a strong personality and sometimes very frankly, Hillier is known for its calls for a better financing of the Canadian armed forces. In 2003, when it was appointed chief of the staff of the army, it said “Any commander who would be held here to say that we do not need more than soldiers should be tarred and déplumé and led out of the city on a rail.”
The February 4th 2005, he became chief of the staff of defense. With the ceremony of chagement of the orders, he repeated his call, more general, in front of the Prime Minister Paul Martin and the Minister for defense Bill Graham, for increased military resources: “In this country, we could not probably give enough resources to the men and women who make to all the things only one asks them to make. But we can give them too little, and it is what we do. You recall them in your budgets.” Its will to speak openly on the question about the money for the budget about defense makes it quite particular as chief of the staff.
Its official biography makes the remark that the Hillier general “likes the majority of the récrératives activities, but in particular, it runs slowly, plays hockey badly and does not play well of the whole to the Golf”.
