In 2005, its population was of 193.777 inhabitants, within an agglomeration of more than 1,2 million inhabitants.

History

Richmond is located at the mouth of the James River. As much of other cities on the east coast of the United States, the site of Richmond was determined by the mouth, like natural barrier. That prevented with the boats from further going up in the grounds.

Richmond was established in 1607 by Christopher Newport and the Capitaine John Smith, which went up the James River ten days after having unloaded with Jamestown. The city took the name of Richmond only in 1737. It comes from Richmond upon Thames in England.

Richmond replaced Williamsburg like capital of the Virginia in 1780.

In 1861, it becomes the capital of the Confédération of the United States during the American Civil War. The city falls to the hands from the Yankee S in 1865 little time before rendering the General Robert Lee to Appomattox.

The city will remain proud of its past of capital of the South but will turn to industrial activities.
