History

Richie Ginther begins its career in automobile sport while being illustrated at the wheel from its private Ferrari. In 1954, it is classified second of the Carrera Panamerica what enables him to be pointed out Scuderia Ferrari at which it will obtain its first professional contract in 1959. In 1960, within Ferrari it finishes second of the 1000 km Buenos Aires and begins in F1 with the GP from Monaco on the 246P. It registers its first point in championship for its first race, which will encourage Ferrari to engage it with two other recoveries on D246: news 6th place with the GP of the Netherlands then 2nd place on the grid and 2nd on arrival of the GP of Italy after having carried out the race in front of Phil Hill. Meanwhile, it is engaged by Lance Reventlow, founder of the stable Scarab to dispute the GP of France but does not manage to qualify itself following a mechanical rupture of Scarab F1.

In 1961, confirmed by Ferrari, it disputes 7 GP at the wheel of the 156. Ginther always carries out beautiful performances in qualifications and confirms in race. It finishes second behind Stirling Moss in Monaco and finishes on the podium in Belgium and Great Britain. At the end of the season, it decides to leave Ferrari for the English stable Owen Racing Organization which engages of BRM.

The season 1962 is much harder since P48 and P57 enable him to take down only two podiums (3rd in France and 2nd in Italy). The following season, at the wheel of P57 more powerful, and always thanks to good qualifications, Ghinter finishes five times on the podium, including three times in the second place. Richie becomes vice-champion of the world, behind Jim Clark, ex-aequo with its fellow-member Graham Hill. In 1964, at the wheel of P261, Ghinter still makes prowesses with the GP of Monaco, where it is classified again 2nd (for the third time in four editions). He reiterates this performance with the GP of Austria, and registered points with 6 recoveries in the season, which he finishes with the fourth rank with 23 points.

In 1965, it is recruited by Honda, stable beginner not-classified in 1964, to support the American quasi-neophyte in F1 Ronnie Bucknum. RA 272 enables him to be done, as with its practice, to notice in qualifications but he pains to confirm in race (4 abandonments in the season, always had with a mechanical breakdown). However, it registers the first point of an Honda in Belgium, repetition in the Netherlands before reaching the dedication at the time of the GP of Mexico where, qualified third for the fourth time of the season, it takes down what will be its only victory in GP and the first of an Honda.

In 1966, the new technical payment obliges the manufacturers to replace the blocks 1500 Cm3 by 3000 Cm3. Honda must almost all begin again to zero and design an engine answering the new regulation. Richie Ghinter begins then the season at Cooper - Maserati, where T81 enables him to take the 5th place of the GP of Belgium. When Honda seems to have finalized new RA 273, it is pointed out but it proves that the single-seater is one cooking technical failure. Ghinter, in three races only however succeeds in taking down the 5th place of the GP of Mexico (where it had brilliantly been qualified in 5th position).

the following year, Ghinter, disappointed performances of Honda, leaves its place to John Surtees (which will register 20 points and will finish 4th championship, the Nipponese single-seaters having found colors) and having joined stable AAR- Eagle of its compatriot daN Gurney. Unfortunately, never the T1G driven by V12 Westlake does not enable him to be qualified in three attempts. As it does not succeed in either taking down its qualification for the 500 Miles of Indianapolis, Ginther decides to take its retirement.
