Richard Riordan

Richard J. Riordan (born on May 1st 1930) is a politician étatsunien of the state of California, member of the Republican party, secretary with the education of California since 2003 and Maire of Los Angeles of 1993 with 2001.

Catholic and married, it has three children.

Born in the state from New York, graduate in philosophy and right, veteran of the War of Korea, Richard Riordan made fortune in the businesses then settled in California where it thrived.

In 1993, it presents to the municipal elections not partisanes of Los Angeles to take the succession of Tom Bradley, mayor (democratic) since 1973. Riordan is republican and is found opposite with Mike Woo, a democratic city council man of Hollywood, recreating a certain political antagonism with completely opposite programs. Riordan was easily elected becoming the first republican mayor of Los Angeles since 30 years (although the elections are apolitical). However, number of its decision were blocked by the municipal council with démcorate majority.

However its style likes and the results enable him to be re-elected with a tidal wave in 1997.

In 2001, not-re-eligible, it must leave its armchair of mayor to the democrat James Hahn. It had supported its adviser Steve Soboroff in the election.

In 2002, he is candidate with the republican primary educations for the post of governor. Its popularity makes it dangerous for the not very popular democratic governor, Gray Davis. But its preserving detractors, who qualify it RINO, pass an objective alliance with Gray Davis to make it lose vis-a-vis the preserving republican candidate, Bill Simon. Davis then conducts insidueusement campaign within the republican primary educations in favor of Simon by qualifying Riordan of false conservative.

The strategy of Davis is paying: Riordan is drawn aside and Davis finds himself vis-a-vis Simon, a candidate too extremist for the moderate electorate of California, allowing him to play her countryside in the center then and to be re-elected of accuracy in November 2002.

In 2003, during the process of recall of Gray Davis of her station of governor, Riordan gives up being presented again and is erased in front of his/her friend Arnold Schwarzenegger whom it supports actively.

In November 2003, he becomes the new secretary with the education of the Schwarzenegger governor.

Following several blunders and dissensions with the governor, Riordan should during the year 2005 resign soon of its station.
