He works like fisherman, clerk, teacher, and even storekeeper. By opening its own shop, he invented a sower with corn , and makes profitable it to exploit it financially. From 1845, it sufficient draws some benefit to devote itself full-time to its marketing and its sale.

In 1850, Gatling obtains a diploma with the Ohio Medical College but is interested more by its career of inventor than by the practice of medicine. He invents in 1861 his machine-gun Gatling after having noticed that the majority of died of the American Civil War were due to the infections rather than with the shootings themselves. He founds the Gatling Gun Company with Indianapolis in 1862. The company will amalgamate with Colt Firearms in 1897.

He writes in 1877:

It appeared to me that if I could invent a machine - a weapon - which by its rate of shooting, would allow a man to do as many damage than a hundred, then it was largely going to supplant the need for large armies, and consequently, the vulnerability with the wars and the diseases was going to be largely decreased.

Meanwhile, it developed the device, and while testing with some improvements, it invented electrical motor machine-guns of variable size. Modern versions of those were introduced into aviation in second half of the 20th century, and in a few terrestrial units. The model Gatling actuated manually was declared obsolete by the American Armée in 1911.

In the following years, it patented new inventions dependant on medical, the bicycles, cleaning with vapor of raw wool, on the pneumatic energy and many other fields. Universally recognized, he was elected with the head of the American Association of the Inventors and Industriels in 1891, for one 6 years duration. Although always rich person with his death, it lost great fortunes in bad investments.
