Richard Helms

Richard McGarrah Helms (March 30th 1913 with Philadelphia - October 23rd 2002) was the director states-unien of the CIA of 1966 with 1973. He is the only director to be condemned for lie by the Congrès of the United States on the secret activities of the CIA.

Biography

In 1936, one year after it received its diploma of the Williams College with Williamstown in the Massachusetts, it is sent by the United Close for the cover of the Olympic Games of summer of 1936 to Berlin, because it had spent two years to the Institut Rosey, a prestigious college Suisse, where it learned how to speak German and French.

With the creation of the CIA by the National Security Act of July 1947, the OSO becomes a division of the CIA. After the disaster of the operation of the Bay of the Pigs to Cuba in 1961, Helms becomes director of the OSO. After having fallen with the Kennedy, it is sent to the Vietnam, where it supervises an attempt to reverse the president Ngo Dinh Diem. After the assassination of John F. Kennedy, Helms is named assistant editor of the CIA, under the direction of the admiral William Raborn. One year after in 1966, it is named director.

In 1972, Helms orders the destruction of the documents of the Projet MKULTRA, a regrouping of more than 150 research projects financed by the CIA, with for objective exploring all possibilities of mental handling and, more particularly, the development of a infallible Truth drug. Nixon regards Helms as being unfair and mandate in 1973 does not renew. Helms is used as 1973 with 1976 as ambassador of the United States in Iran.
