Richard D. Winters
Born on January 21st, 1918 with Lancaster Country in Pennsylvania, graduate of Franklin Marshall College, Richard Dick Winters engage in the army in 1941. During the basic drives, Winters is intrigued by its officer of instruction which makes one hour an explanatory speech on a rifle that he believed to hold in his hands whereas it was not the good.
It is also during its classes that Winters discovers the airborne troops. It decides at once to engage as voluntary in the Airborne troops whose it did not know the existence, just like most of American at the time.
It joined the Easy Company 506th PIR ('' Parachute Infantry Regiment '') during the summer 1942 as a section head to the training grounds of Toccoa in Georgia. The relations between Winters and its direct superior, the Captain Herbert Sobel, are not with the good shape and to avoid tensions which can harm the good progress of the operations, Sobel is transferred in another regiment and is replaced by Lieutenant Thomas Meehan.
In Normandy, Meehan is killed the D-day, and Winters becomes the commander of Easy by substitution. He excels at this station and the State American Major, progressively on the evolution of the engagements in Europe, decides to gradually raise it in rank. Richard D. Winters becomes Major at the end of the Second world war.
Winters was an officer very close to his men, not hesitating to go ahead of of the attacks, analyzing in a fast and effective way the situations (the attack which it organized and ordered the D-day close to the Manor of Brécourt in Normandy is nowadays studied, commented on and taught at the American school of the officers of West Point for its astonishing effectiveness) and not hesitating to refuse orders which it considered useless, as with Haguenau, in Alsace, where Winters refused to set up a patrol of combat.
The televised series Brothers in arms (Band off Brothers) are based the memories of the war of the veterans of Easy Compagny. The actor Damian Lewis interprets Richard D. Winters .
