The republican Companies of safety , also known under the Initials CRS , are a body of the National police force in France, intervening in the Manifestation S, but also in the Civil protection. There exist 61 companies. CRS n° 01 is exclusively attached to services of protection of personalities at the time of official trips.

In theory, the initials “CRS” indicate a company, but in the current language, by Métonymie, a CRS is a police officer member of such a company.

History

CRS, create in 1944 and reorganized in 1948, form a crack corps broken to the anti-riot techniques. Their initial recruitment mixed with the elements engaged previously in the mobile Groupes of reserve (GMR) created by the Régime of Vichy and with the elements resulting from the French Forces of the interior (FFI) engaged in the resistance. Whereas the communist sympathizers were at the origin very present in its rows (what is explained by their engagement in the Résistance, and according to some by a will of Entrisme), a purification limited their number after the Communist party had been placed in the opposition to the governments of post-war period.

By carrying out the monitoring and the blocking of the demonstrations, it achieves the task of the body of the men-at-arms (become gendarmes today), created with the Moyen-âge, at the origin to subdue the revolts of the blue feet (dyers).

Their maintenance missions and of re-establishment of the order, often making use of the force, exposes them to criticisms recurring of the demonstrators. A famous slogan of May 68 was “CRS = S”. More pleasantly, their initials could be diverted within the framework of retro-acronymies (to refer to the article for some examples) .

CRS are also charged with the road monitoring (in particular thanks to the motorcylcists), of the monitoring of the beaches and the Mountain rescue.

It should be noted that there are henceforth Femme S in CRS within CRS highway. The only woman currently in service in company of Maintenance of law and order is in CRS n° 20 of Limoges. Rank of Lieutenant de Police, it is in place since 2004.

Within the national police, the member of the anti-riot polices have activities of maintenance of law and order similar to those of CRS.

There exists a Musée of CRS, located on the site of Vélizy-Villacoublay (78).

The central management of the republican companies of safety (DCCRS) is composed of a central level and zonal directions. Philippe Laureau succeeded Christian Lambert with the head of CRS the August 2007.

; Decree of the December 8th 1944 bearing creation of the republican Companies of safety

Article 1st: It is created in the whole of the territory of the mobile forces of police force called republican Compagnies of safety. These forces are grouped in each area under the authority of a regional commander placed under the orders of the general secretary for the police force of the area.
Article 2: It is created twenty regional commands distributed as follows: for the whole of the departments of Seine-et-Oise and Seine-et-Marne, for the the Moselle, for each of the ten eight regional police stations. The Minister of Interior Department will fix by decree the manpower of the regional commands.
Article 4: The conditions of parking and use of the republican Companies of safety will be the subject of a decree of the Minister of Interior Department.
Article 5: The Minister of Interior Department is in charge of the execution of this decree, which will be published in the Journal officiel de la R3epublique fran1caise.
