Ricercare

The ricercare or ricercar is old a musical Forme (period of the high baroque) based on the process of the imitation. The French equivalent is research used for example by the organist Jehan Titelouze.

It is a contrapuntic form less elaborate than the Fugue, which is later and exploits a generating topic in a systematic way whereas the ricercare connects different episodes which can be without bond set of themes.

In a paradoxical way, Bach uses the word ricercare to indicate erudite contrapuntic architectures of sound · “Musical Offering” dedicated to the king of Prussia music lover Frederic II, with the Acrostic :
R egis I ussu C antio E T R elic C anonica has rte R esoluta i.e.
music made by order of the king, and the remainder solved by the art of the gun .
