Origins: of Tiregarne with Ricamarie
Named Tiregarne until the 17th century, the locality takes then the name of Rycamarie then Ricamarie, probably drawn from an owner, Mr Raquamier or Récamier. Some evoke another hypothetical etymology, of Latin origin, in connection with its mining past: ricamina or will ricaminera meaning rich person undermines .

In addition to the many farms which strewed the slopes, Ricamarie drew especially its prosperity from the exploitation of the mines of coal, which attracted the population very early. One counted already 3 mines in 1709 (the Mine, Béraudière, Montcel) and in 1843, the commune counted 4 mining companies, under the control of only one local authority since 1841. Ricamarie will become a commune the July 22nd 1843 thanks to Louis Philippe.
Ricamarie was a high place of the fight of the French minors for the improvement of their living and working conditions (with in particular Michel Rondet), certain events having been one of the sources of inspiration of Emile Zola for his novel Germinal. One of the principal events took place the June 16th 1869, with the place known as the Flaring , when the troop shot at crowd from the demonstrators gathered with the Quentin well: the shooting made 14 dead of which a 16 month old child and many casualties.
Administration
The mayors are initially senior officers of the Mines or republicans moderate. Starting from 1919 and until in 1940, the municipality evolves to the left. (Let us note that Jean-Marie Pons dies during her mandate, replaced thus by André Allette.)The elections being removed under the Vichy government, a special delegation replaces the municipal council then the mayor is named by the State. After the release, Auguste Poinat is mayor of the Committee of Release.
The town hall passes on the left, with a communist majority as of 1947. The longevity of Fernand Montagnon, who will transmit his function to its first assistant Marc Faure in 1990, is the symbol of a long political continuity. However, in 1995, the line taken along by Georges Berne gains the elections. The left takes again the orders in 2001, again with Marc Faure.
Georges Berne was carried under the full glare of the medias in 2005 by her judgment for Trading of favors and Sexual harassment, made confirmed by the Court of Appeal of Lyon. Mr. Bern provided himself in cassation.
