Ribot (horse)
Ribot (1952 - 1972) was a racehorse English Pur-sang pertaining to the breeding of Federico Tesio (1867-1954). It was one of the great champions of the history of the horse-races.
Born in England but high in Italy in the best breeding from the country, resulting from the ace Tenerani and Romanella , by El Greco , this foal bai was named, like often in the Tesio breeding, in reference to an artist (the French painter Augustin Théodule Ribot). It was the downward one of a prestigious dynasty: Bellini , Cavaliere d' Arpino , Havresac II …, in other words the cream of the Tesio breeding, which died before seeing its more beautiful jewel covering glory in Europe.
Many the great champions of the history at least once knew the defeat, such Man O' War, Nijinsky, Sea Bird or Brigadier Gerald. Ribot , him, remained unconquered throughout its career. During three seasons, it gained not only all the great Italian races, but extended its supremacy in England as well, where it was essential in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes, as in France, where it twice signed its more beautiful exploit while gaining by (in 1955 and 1956) the Prix of the Triumphal arch, which does of him one of the five double winners of the most prestigious race of the world, with Ksar , Corrida , Tantième and Alleged. The Rating of 142 that Timeform allotted to him is the higher fourth of the history.
At the conclusion of its career of races, Ribot was sent to the United States to become a large standard there. It gave two prizes winner of the Prix of the Triumphal arch, Molvedo and Prince Royal , like Ragusa the American and champions Tom Rolfe and Arts and Letters , and the exceptionally gifted one but unlucky person Graustark . Very influential on the stud, one also finds it in the pedigrees of important reproducers such Alleged, His Majesty or Danehill, and of many champions, so much in Europe (Miesque, Sakhee…) that in the United States (traditional the Funny Cide , Pleasant Colony or Barbaro ). Ribot was crowned with three resumptions Chief candidate of the standards in England and Ireland (1963, 67,68).
In the beginning, Ribot was to remain only 5 years with the American stud farm of Darby daN, before returning to Europe. But it showed an extremely difficult, very dominating and almost dangerous character, so that any insurance company did not agree to cover the risk of a transatlantic voyage. Ribot thus remained in the United States until its death, and was buried in 1972 with the equine cemetery of Darby daN, where its sons Graustark and His Majesty joined it in 1988 and 1995.
Sign of its immense popularity in Italy, on March 18th 2003, the Post office of San Marino emitted a series of 4 stamps in homage to the largest Italian horses. It devotes Molvedo (stamp of 11 hundreds of euros), Tornese (stamp of 15 hundred of euros), Ribot (stamp of 26 hundreds of euros) and Varenne, this last profiting from the stamp expensive, to 155 hundreds of euros.
