The festival of Ménétriers ()
According to the tradition, a lord of Ribeaupierre would have given a part to a ménétrier who had broken his instrument. To thank it for its generosity, the ménétriers chose this family as suzerain. It was there is more than 600 years…
Actually, with the Middle Ages, the emperors needed to supervise this stirring up, if not worrying corporation. They had chosen an Alsatian lord to ensure patronage and to ensure an organization of it to him. It is within this framework that was born the festival from Ménétriers: it was the occasion to find and regulate the conflicts. The ménétriers met in the inns of the city for the festival of the Nativity of the Virgin (September 8th): they attended the mass then paid homage to the lord in the large court of the castle; the following day, the court held audience. During all these days, there was great environment of festival in all the city. This situation was prolonged until the Revolution day before: the last Pfeifertag was celebrated in 1788.
But after the ménétriers, Ribeauvillois preserved the festival under the same name. It took importance gradually, thanks to the local companies, with many attractions whose majority attract today still a public increasingly many thanks to the work of the Festival committee and takes place all first Sundays of September.
