Ribat

The ribat is originally small a fortress built like a frontier line of defense in the first times of the Moslem conquest of the the Maghreb. These forts are then used to protect trade route but also to diffuse the Islam.
They thus become with the time of the lodgings for the travellers but also of the refuges for the mystical . In this direction, the ribats are perhaps at the origin of the first currents of the Soufisme. One can in this direction compare these places to Zaouïa S. the marabout, term under which one indistinctly indicates in North Africa the Saint S, the chiefs of tribes and the healers popular, is thus that which lives a ribat.
