The department of the Rhone delta (13) is a department French of the area Provence-Alp-Coast of Azure. Its inhabitants are the Buccorhodaniens.
The department was created with the French revolution, the March 4th 1790, pursuant to the law of the December 22nd 1789, starting from part of the province of Provence, as well as few principalities (Orange, Martigues, Lambesc).
Wider than today, it lost all the part of its territory located at the north of the Durance at the time of the creation of the Département of Vaucluse, including in particular Orange and Apt.

The population (1999) is of 1.832.620 inhabitants, especially urban. Community of communes of Marseilles-Provence-Metropolis account 898.640 inhabitants (including 798.430 in the commune of Marseilles), Aix-en-Provence: 132.970 inhabitants, Martigues 43.500 inhabitants and Arles 52.060 inhabitants.
The censuses of 2004 and 2005 estimate the population of the department at 1.906.000 inhabitants. The commune of Marseilles: 820.900 inhabitants, Aix-en-Provence: 140.100 inhabitants, Martigues: 45.400 inhabitants, Arles: 52.600 inhabitants
