Rhodos (in Greek Ρόδος / Ródos ) is a Greek island , the largest island of Dodécanèse (twelve islands), between the Aegean Sea and the the Mediterranean. It is located at the south-east of the Aegean Sea, with 17,7 km of the Turkey, between Greece and the island of Cyprus. The population in 2004 is estimated at 100 000 inhabitants.
Rhodos is also the name of the principal city; this one is populated 50 000 with 60 000 inhabitants.
The Colossus of Rhodes, gigantic statue located at the entry of the port of the town of Rhodos was one of the seven wonders of the world.
Mythology
Apollon is the first to see the island leaving water and finds it so beautiful, that it decides to take it under his protection. Some time afterwards, Apollon obtains from a local nymph three children, three boys whose names are Kamiros, Ialissos and Lindos which created the first three cities of the island.
The old writings say that the town of Lindos provided 7 ships to the Achaens which left for Troy.
History
The Doriens invaded the island as of the oldest times. The island knows one power and boom as of the period known as " archaïque". The three principal cities of Rhodos at that time are: Lindos on the coast méditéranéenne of the island, Kamiros and Ialissos on the Aegean Sea. Kamiros is the first to strike its currency.
In 322 av. J. - C., Rhodos was integrated into the empire of Alexandre Large the. After the death of this one, Rhodos maintained the close commercial relations with the kingdom of the Ptolémées installed in Egypt.
After a first earthquake in 226 av. J. - C., the city was destroyed. Then in 142 av. J. - C. under the Roman domination, a second earthquake put at evil the remainder of the city which was plundered just like the remainder of the island, by the legionaries of Cassius. The city of Kamiros was destroyed then abandoned. It will be redécouverte at the XIXe century and studied by Danish archeologists.
In 164 av. J. - C., Rhodos signed a treaty with Rome.
With the 1st century, Paul de Tarse évangélisa the island. It is old évêché.
Between 1307 and 1522, the island was the seat of the order of Hospital of Midsummer's Day of Jerusalem. The Hospital ones unloaded on Rhodos in 1307 and completed the conquest in of it 1310. They strengthened the city, leaving the impressive current walls. In the low part of Rhodos, the collachion , they built the palate of the large Master and the “inns”, residences being used for Hospital come from Occident to fight against the Moslems. The island essuya a first seat in 1480, before falling to the hands from the Turks from Soliman the Magnificent the in 1522, after a five month old seat.
In 1912, the Italy seized the island which belonged to the Turks then. The island passed under Greek sovereignty in 1948.
