Rhinau

Rhinau is a common French, located in the department of the the Low-Rhine and the area Alsace.

Geography

The village of Rhinau is located on the the Rhine at 30 km at the south of Strasbourg. Its remarkable characteristic is to have 1000 hectares of its territory located on Right Bank of the Rhine, namely in Germany. This characteristic is due to a divagation of the river going back to 1541 which was anchored in the history to the signature to Münster of the Traité of Westphalia which put an end, in 1648, with the “Guerre Thirty Year old”. The continuity of the territory of the commune is ensured by its vat “Rhenanus” which gives access, since French bank, with one of most beautiful natural reserves of safeguarding of the landscapes of Ried and moderate forest tunnel.

History

In 1592, the “War of the Bishops” beats full sound. 2500 Swiss, primarily of the Berneses and the Inhabitants of Zurich, arrive in reinforcement of the troops of the protesting magistrate of Strasbourg. They attack the troops of the catholic duke of Lorraine. July 20th, seven companies of Lansquenet S are launched on the Lorraine positions with Erstein. In the passing, they set fire to Fegersheim and Rhinau.

The construction of the hydro-electric power station and the large channel of Alsace had as a consequence the appearance of a 10 km length island ranging between this one and the old course of the Rhine. The Southern part of this island was classified natural reserve in order to take into account the exceptional faunal and floristic richness of this site.
