Rhapsody (operating system)

Presentation

Rhapsody was the name given by Apple to the Operating system which was to succeed Mac OS 8. Its development began fine 1996 after the repurchase of NeXT.

Its architecture derived from that of NeXTSTEP but it preserved many common points with Mac OS, like its Graphical interface and compatibility with the applications traditional Macintosh. It was to turn as well under processor PowerPC (Macintosh) as x86 (compatible PC). Rhapsody was conceived around a Micro-noyau Mach and of an BSD-Unix underlayer.

It for the first time was presented to the World Wide Developers Conférence of 1997, the final version being planned for spring 1998. The version developers was available in fine times 1997, but the Rhapsody project was abandoned when Apple presented Mac OS X in June 1998. Rhapsody nevertheless was marketed in the form of Mac OS X Server in 2000. The code of Rhapsody was integrated in Darwin, the core Open source of Mac OS X. Mac OS X left finally only in 2001, that is to say 5 years after the beginning of the development of Rhapsody.
